Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus and the only divided city in the world, is a busy cosmopolitan town in the inland with very warm summers.

Shopping is a must in Nicosia with it's excellent quality, reasonable prices and trendy shops, but not very far away at all, you can find the "roots" of old Nicosia.

The old Venetian walls were built to protect the city from invaders and "Laiki Yitonia" is an area that has managed to keep it's traditional form. The city is a must, with public transport to avoid traffic and is suggested for a day tour.

The only European divided city has a lot to offer especially in terms of culture exploration. The Green line and the Old Nicosia with its old houses exhibiting times of glory, now host museums, taverns, souvenir and handicraft centres. One such an area is “Laiki Yitonia” where people enjoy a nice and relaxing atmosphere at the local taverns, souvenir shops and coffee shops.

11km of Walls have surrounded Nicosia since the old times with gates at several points for entrance into Nicosia. The Venetians, for defence created these walls and half of these gates now remain within the Greek Sector; the most important of which is the Famagusta Gate was the principal entrance to the city and is the best Venetian Monument.

In 1570 the Ottomans invaded the city with the destruction of the walls, they burned the city, demolished the churches and palaces and looted the whole city.

The Green Line, is rather imaginative than real. The line only exists in the mind of people where all of a sudden you cannot walk a step further than in the maps. Physically it is the division of Cyprus after the Turkish Invasion of 1974. It divides Nicosia in two parts, the Greek and the Turkish Sector.

The Cyprus Museum

Considered one of the best museums with exhibits from 6800 BC to the Roman occupation of 300 AD. Soapstone idols and red and white pottery of 3000 BC, a collection of Terracotta figures, the statute of Aphrodite from Soli dated at 100 BC, a bronze statue of Severus the Roman Emperor are a few of the important exhibits at the Museum.

The Archbishops Palace
These are the private apartments’ of the first President of the Republic of Cyprus.

The statue of Archbishop Makarios III, who played a vital role in the Cyprus modern history is located just outside.

The Byzantine Museum
Located near to the Archbishops’ palace and apartments, this is certainly one of the most impressive icon collections on the island, hosting icons stolen by the Turks after the invasion of 1974 and later bought back at a great expense on the black market.
