The Town of Zinon the Kiteus, who was the founder of the Stoic Thought and the City had his name given. Kition is another name given to the town due to Zinon in the ancient times.
Ancient Kition
Most of the Modern Larnaca city is built on top of the Ancient city of Kition.
A Mycenaean Settlement site estimated at the 13th Century BC where a wealth of pottery, jewllery and alabaster vessels was discovered in the tombs by a courtyard. A massive city wall still present was built out of Cyclopean and also the remains of a large temple which the Phoenicians in 9th Century BC converted it to a temple of Astarte. All the findings are exhibited in the Larnaca District Archaeological Museum.
Ayios Lazaros
Built by Emperor Leo VI in the 9th Century A.D. A Church that unlike all the others survived the Turkish Ban, due to the fact that Turkish were afraid of Rebellion. Its high towers were used to signal the start of the uprising against the Turks. Lazaros, who was resurrected by Jesus but later expelled by the Jews, came to Cyprus were he died and was buried.
In 890 A.D. his tomb was found and his remains where sent to Constantinople, only to be removed later by the French and sent to Marseilles. The Saint Lazaros empty sarcophagus is found under the sanctuary near the south apse.
Pierides Museum
Demetrios Pierides, a man with Venetian ancestry, in 1839 gathered Terracotta statues from the ancient city of Marion, and some other medieval pottery. Early maps of Cyprus on display also attract many peoples' attention.
Hala Sultan Tekke
According to the legend Umm Haram, the foster mother of the Prophet Mohammed is buried here. It is suggested that she broke her neck falling from a mule while traveling to Cyprus with her husband, during an Arab raid in 647 AD. A dome constructed at 1760 now encloses the Sanctuary of Umm Haram.
Derynia
A now remote village offered for observation of the Green Line and the position of the Greek, UN and Turkish forces. At this point you may see the past famous city of Famagusta deserted. Many guests in Cyprus choose to visit this site in order to get a “Hands-On” experience.
Pyla
The only village in Cyprus at the moment where Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots still live united in one village. After the Turkish Invasion, this village remained within both sides of the border and had always been half Greek and half Turkish, so it was decided that the two communities would live there together.
Presently around and inside the village there is the presence of both forces, also the UN. The people despite their differences, understand that each others opinions must be handled with understanding.
Larnaca Fort and Museum
This 1625 building dates back to the early British rule of the island where it was used as a prison and barracks. Now it houses objects from the Kition and the Hala Sultan Mosque. Ancient Cannons are still there which were used by the Turks to protect the Harbour. |
