You might also consider our many suggested and popular places to visit.

Your holidays to Cyprus can be anything you want it to be, with the island offering something for everyone, regardless of age or interests. During your holidays to Cyprus, we recommend car hire in order to make the most of your time on the island, and if you are planning to do some exploring in the Troodos Mountains or in The Akamas Peninsula, then a 4 x 4 vehicle is a must.

The Troodos Mountains are approximately 60 kilometres from Paphos, 40 kilometres from Limassol, 110 kilometres from Larnaca and 150 kilometres from Ayia Napa, but the drive is well worth it to see the tiny traditional mountain villages dotted around the mountains. One of those such villages is Omodos, famous for its wine production and is the home to Monastery of the Holy Cross which dates back to 327AD, when Ayia Eleni visited the island. Arsos village is built at 800m, is set on chalky rock and is predominantly a vine village. In the village you will find the church of St Philip - which is described as 'a vast modern building on an ancient site'.

One area to explore is The Akamas Peninsula, but should only be attempted with a 4 x 4 vehicle. Some of the best scenery and most spectacular views can be found here in this vast area of natural beauty.

Make time to visit Lara, the isolated sandy beach, where the Green and Loggerhead Turtles choose to lay their eggs, year after year; the eggs are laid usually during August and September and will hatch about 7 weeks later. Fontana Amorosa, a beautiful area and a perfect place for swimming, Avakas Gorge and Adonis Baths are also recommended.

Around the Paphos area, you will find many of the famous and important historical sights.

Some of the highly recommended places to see are:

Paphos Fort
The Lusignians built the Fort as a defence against a sea borne attack. The Venetians destroyed the Frankish Tower at the time of the Turkish Invasion of 1570 in order not leave it behind for the enemy. In 1580, the Turkish rebuilt the Frankish Tower to its current form.

Roman Theatre
The Theatre stands close to the lighthouse and is a very impressive semicircle building, which was built in 200 AD and reconstructed in 400 AD after the massive earthquakes.

Tombs of the Kings
Despite the fact that there is no royalty buried in the Tombs of the Kings, the Tombs host various rank officers of several periods. Dated from 300 BC, these Tombs were cut into the rock and many exhibits have been located like potteries, gold & silver coins. The surrounding area is known as the Necropolis of Paphos due to the vast area of the Tombs spread.

In the Limassol area
Kolossi Castle
An Impressive castle with Cypress trees and gardens. The Knights Hospitaler was granted land at Kolossi by King Hugh I in 1210 and they built a castle.

When Acre fell in 1291 the headquarters moved to Kolossi and the Grand Commandery of Kolossi became renowned as the richest possession of the Knights.

The original Kolossi Castle suffered much damage during the Genoese attacks and the Mamelukes ravaged the lands in 1425. This led to the rebuilding of the Castle at the Mid-Fifteenth Century.

In the Larnaca area
The famous Lefkara village, where you can explore some traditional hand made Lace, which legend says, captivated Leonardo Da Vinci when he visited the area.

Choirokitia
One of the most important Neolithic settlements found in the World ever.

Pierides Museum
Demetrios Pierides, a man with Venetian ancestry, in 1839 gathered Terracota statues from the ancient city of Marion, and some other medieval pottery. Early maps of Cyprus on display also attract many peoples' attention.
