Situated on the west coast of Cyprus Paphos is one of the most popular resorts on the island. When it comes to the history and culture of Cyprus Paphos is most definitely the capital.

On the island of Cyprus Paphos is known as “the Playground of the Gods” or “Aphrodite’s Island”, due to the legend, which says that Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love chose to be born here in Paphos.

Paphos City is divided into two areas: Pano Paphos (upper) and Kato or New Paphos (lower). Pano Paphos is home to the old town, with its market place, shops and endless narrow, winding roads, while Kato Paphos is the newly developed tourist area with its hotels, bars and restaurants, but still bursting with history. Although only a small town in Cyprus Paphos is listed as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Cities, and the chance of finding something ancient every 3-4 metres is over 85%!

Cyprus Paphos. The birthplace of Aphrodite.

About Paphos

The original Paphos was founded a lot earlier and in a different location to the one we know today. Near the village of Kouklia, Palea Paphos existed. Unfortunately time has not been very kind to Palea Paphos and some of its interesting monuments do not stand any more due to the earthquakes.

Also home to one of the most famous discoveries in Cyprus Paphos is proud of its ‘Tombs of the Kings’. Although there is no true royalty in the Tombs, the Tombs do contain various high ranking officers and wealthy citizens of several periods. Dated back to 300 BC, these Tombs were cut into the rock and many exhibits were found including Pottery, Gold and Silver Coins and other important historical objects. The surrounding area is called the Necropolis of Paphos due to the vast spread of the Tombs.
