A 'Must See' while you are in Cyprus is the Akamas Peninsula in the Paphos region, an area of great natural beauty. The Avakas Gorge and Lara Bay (where turtles lay their eggs) are also worth a trip, as are Aphrodite's temple and the birthplace of Aphrodite in the very attractive area of Polis and Latchi, the ancient Kourion with the odeon along with Kolossi Castle built by Richard the Lionheart, the Troodos Mountains and the Kykko Monastery in it's real gold plated church. No visit to Cyprus is complete without visiting at least these places of interest. A "Meze Night" is also a must as regards the food taste of Cyprus, but search for a taverna that is away from the tourism areas to try the original meze which is traditionally more than 70 dishes or at least 20 large dishes in current times. Maybe, you might also want to try the local Zivania which is the "fire-water" of Cyprus (80%-90%) pure alcohol and we would highly advise you not to have anymore than 1 shot. The food in a Meze begins with several starters such as the Greek Salad and the dips: Tzantiki, Tahini, Taramosalada, Patatosalada amongst others, it then goes on to small portions of: Mousaka, Afelia, Stifado and other smaller dishes of Souvlaki, Sheftalia and Lamb Chops, Kalamari and other small fish dishes.
For dessert there is Galatopoureko, Baklava, Poureki and other desserts to choose from. To finish off your meal, try a Cyprus Coffee with a local brandy or a Brandy Sour.
Brandy Sour is the traditional drink of Cyprus and was discovered by the British troops stationed in Cyprus in the 1940's and is made from Brandy, Lemon squash, Angostura bitters and Soda. A very refreshing drink.
Frape is cold coffee, where the coffee is beaten in a blender to produce a froth before the milk and cold water are added. Another non-alcoholic drink to refresh your holiday! |
